Following on from the expected reduction in public sector orders in March, the normally slow month of April has thrown up some very pleasant surprises here at Summit. Like the success of Inflexion.

In March we brought you Horizon, our most environmentally friendly chair yet. Taking one more step towards our goal of becoming carbon neutral.
This month has been very busy, not only with delivering a surprisingly large amount of chairs, in spite of the public spending cuts but also due to having our annual ISO systems audit.
As part of our ISO14001 environmental management system we can report, as a result of a significant investment in a new powder coating oven in December 08, our energy consumption for this process has been reduced by 20%. There will have been a similar reduction in our carbon emissions.
Also with the removal of our antiquated electric, solvent based degreasing system our environmental credentials have been boosted with 80% less energry consumed for this process. We are working on reducing other aspects of our energy usage and carbon emissions with the long term goal of becoming carbon neutral.
Another environmental initiative is the launch of your purpose built web dealer area for less reliance on paper and ink. Here you will find weekly updates, dealer sign-up, brochure requests and registration for chair samples. It gives you access to all our advice, tips, ranges and helps you promote and sell more Summit chairs.

Eighteen months ago we developed a product to meet the very challenging demands of Academy schools. Our SK10 stacking chair has a robust frame, tamper proof construction with T-nutted seat and back fixings and extra thick seat boards. The quality of its construction has resulted in very significant sales to the education market. To consolidate this success and broaden its appeal the SK10 has successfully met the BS EN 15373:2007 standard for non domestic seating to test level 3. This is the highest level possible; covering severe contract applications; amongst others, oil rigs, nightclubs, police stations, transport terminals, hospital public areas, sports changing rooms, barracks and prisons.
As part of this standard, the chair has to withstand a static load of 2000 Newtons on the seat and 700 Newtons on the back. This roughly equates to a 32 stone person.
We commissioned SATRA to extend the static testing on the chair and it subsequently withstood loads equating to that applied by a 50 stone person. At this point the test had to end because the hydraulic cylinders had reached their maximum capacity.
